This is our third release of a Cabernet Franc from Hedges Vineyard. We love this site and this fruit for many reasons. The Red Mountain AVA is unique as the hottest AVA in Washington but its soil type also lends so much to the boldness of the wines. Working with the Hedges family is also wonderful for their commitment to organic and biodynamic farming practices. They take such amazing care of their fruit and it’s always so beautiful. One thing specifically about the Cab Franc from this site that is special is that we can pick it earlier than most reds and still avoid an intense bell pepper-pyrazine profile that you would certainly get from a cooler climate Cab Franc. This is all due to the heat. Some might say that an earlier harvest would produce a wine with less phenolic ripeness but that doesn’t appear to be the case in Red Mountain. This is another reason we love the area and this site specifically.
The lightest and brightest of the reds in this release, our Cabernet Franc shines with aromatics of cherry cola, purple jolly rancher, and sprigs of lavender. True to the variety, there's a super subtle green bell pepper note alongside a dash of white pepper. On the palette, it’s perfectly medium bodied, with mouth watering acidity and soft tannin. Its freshness lends maximum food pairing versatility here; stuffed peppers would be magical.
